Island of Santorini / Port of Santorini

The stamp presents a vertical view of the volcanic island of Santorini (Thera). It depicts the waterfront of the historic Old Port (Skala) with traditional boats moored in the foreground, whitewashed vaulted Aegean architecture at the base, and the iconic, winding zig-zag staircase carved into the steep volcanic cliffside leading up to the clifftop town of Fira.

This stamp belongs to the celebrated 17-stamp "Tourist Publicity" definitive set issued in February 1961. The series was launched to highlight ancient Greek archaeological sites, island landscapes, and architectural treasures to international visitors during the 1960s Aegean tourism revival.

The drawing captures the historical transport route of Santorini before modern tourism infrastructure. Prior to the construction of the Fira Cable Car in 1979, all sailors, passengers, and cargo arriving at the island's port had to climb the 587 stone steps up the caldera wall on foot or by mule.
